Tummy Tuck

Okay, so you are tired of all of the crunches that seem to be getting you nowhere and wand to have a tummy tuck to give you the sculpted torso that you crave. This procedure it called an abdominoplasty and it will flatten your stomach by removing excess fat and skin, and tighten the muscles in your abdomen.

If you don't have any health issues then you will be a good candidate for a tummy tuck. If you are a woman and have given birth, you stomach muscles are weak and this procedure will help to tighten them. And if you've lost a lot of weight and have excessive fat deposits or loose skin in your abdominal area then abdominoplasty is for you.

This surgery will last anywhere from 1 to 5 hours depending on what you want done. Another factor to consider is do you want to have this done as an outpatient or do you want to stay in the hospital to recuperate for a day or two. You will be out completely during the surgery it does require complete anesthesia. So if you are having this done as an outpatient you will need someone to drive you home.

For a complete abdominoplasty your surgeon will make an incision low on the abdomen, around your pubic hair and it will extend from hip bone to the other. Your skin and muscle are then manipulated as much as necessary. Because it's important to keep your navel free from surrounding tissue it will require an incision around your belly button. You may have drainage tubes under your skin that your surgeon will remove a few days following your surgery.

If your fat is all located below the navel then your surgeon might recommend a mini-abdominoplasty surgery which will require shorter incisions. An endoscope can be used for this type of surgery. The procedure usually only takes a couple of hours depending on your needs and you may still have drainage tubes after surgery.

No matter which surgery you have your incision site will be stitched and bandaged. Your surgeon will instruct you on how to care for the bandage after your surgery. Your surgeon will also instruct you on how to the most comfortable and pain free ways to sit and lay down.

If you are an exceptionally physically active person, beware: You will have to severely limit strenuous exercise for at least six weeks. Your doctor will advise you on this as you go through the healing process. You may need to take up to one month off work after the surgery to ensure proper recovery. Again, your doctor will help you determine this based on your personal situation.

Your home recovery area should include:

• Loose clothing

• Limited exercise

• Stop smoking

• Proper nutrition

• Telephone within reaching distance

• Hand-held shower head and bathroom chair

Only you know you so make sure that your home or wherever you are going to recover is comfortable and safe and can meet all of your personal needs after your tummy tuck surgery.
