Cosmetic Surgery Breast Augmentation

If you want to enhance the size and/or shape of your breast then cosmetic surgery breast augmentation may be for you.

Reasons for a breast augmentation

• You feel that your breasts are too small

• Your breasts have gotten smaller after pregnancy

• Reconstructive after breast surgery

If you would like to improve the way that you look and are physically healthy and have realistic expectations, then you would be a good candidate for breast augmentation surgery.

Types of Implants for Breast Augmentation

• Saline and silicone - most saline-filled breast implants share some standard features, like a silicone rubber shell and a valve for filling with saline solution, but they come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some implants are round, and some are anatomical. The shape of the implants you choose may affect the shape of your augmented breasts.

• There is also an inflatable implant that may work for you.

The Procedure

An incision can be made either in the crease where the breast meets the chest, around the areola which is the dark skin surround the nipple, or in the armpit. Working through the incision, your cosmetic surgeon will lift your breast tissue and skin to create a pocket, either directly behind the breast tissue or underneath your chest wall muscle. The implants are then centered beneath your nipples.

Some surgeons believe that putting the implants behind your chest muscle may reduce the potential for capsular contracture. This placement may also interfere less with breast examination by mammogram than if the implant is placed directly behind the breast tissue. Placement behind the muscle however, may be more painful for a few days after surgery than placement directly under the breast tissue.

Recovery

You may feel tired and sore for a few days after your surgery, but you'll be up and around in 24 to 48 hours. Most of your discomfort can be controlled by prescribed medication. You may also experience a burning sensation in your nipples for about two weeks, but this will subside as bruising fades. Your stitches will come out in a week to 10 days, but the swelling in your breasts may take three to five weeks to disappear.
